Lifetime Achievement Award

TOmmy Simmons

2017 Award Recipient

Tommy Collier Simmons, a Baton Rouge High and LSU journalism school alumnus, is a national award-winning food writer/editor and entertaining, gardening and arts enthusiast.

Simmons began her journalism career with The Advocate and the State-Times newspapers in 1968, starting out as a business writer before meeting Pat Baldridge, the food editor of both newspapers, and agreeing in 1976 to write a weekly column, “In Baton Rouge Kitchens,” featuring local cooks and their recipes.

“I wanted to learn about food and cooking from our talented home cooks and to allow them to discuss their ideas for entertaining as well as share their tips and recipes,” Tommy recalled.

This award recognizes a person from the Baton Rouge area who has dedicated their life to service in the Baton Rouge community and is named in honor of its first recipient.
